Juneau November 7th 1987 (Saturday) 10:00AM | The Veterans 10K of Saturday 7 November 1987. The Empire printed 73 places; 72 are recorded here, because the 52nd is printed with a time of 52.31 and the word "unavailable" where the name should be. There is no one to attach that time to, so it is noted rather than invented. Al Graves won in 32.48 from Dan Keliher, eight seconds back. Marilyn Barnwell, seventh, is the only runner the paper marked with an x. Steve Boyd finished 73rd with his time printed "n/a" and is recorded without one. Gordon Harrison's time was printed as 38.60 and is stored as 39:00, which is where it falls between the runners either side. Three other times run backwards against the finish order and are stored exactly as printed - most obviously Troy Duke's 40th place, printed 38.31 between a 48.17 and a 49.02, where the minutes digit is probably a 4. Twin Lakes to the Juneau Fire Station, Juneau August 22nd 1987 (Saturday) 11:59PM | Only Fools Run at Midnight, a three-mile fun run to benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association in Alaska, starting at Twin Lakes and finishing at the Juneau Fire Station. Seven dollars, registration at 11 p.m., glow sticks handed out just before the start, and four-colour t-shirts for the first 150 to register. Prizes went to the top finishers in three classes - kids 4 to 12, men and women, and masters men and women over 50 - and for the best costume. The grand prize, for the most pledges sold, was a trip for two to Copenhagen. Sponsored by the Juneau area-wide fire departments with the Juneau Medical Center, Juneau Travel, Scandinavian Airlines, the Juneau Empire, TAKU 105 and KJNO. Recorded from the advertisement; no results are known. The advertisement reads "Saturday, August 22 ... at midnight", and the race is filed on that Saturday rather than in the small hours of the Sunday, which is how the site's other runnings are recorded. Mendenhall Glacier parking lot, Juneau August 8th 1987 (Saturday) 7:00AM | The 1987 Juneau Marathon, 8 a.m. on Saturday 8 August, out and back from the Mendenhall Glacier parking lot with the turnaround at Centennial Hall downtown. A half marathon and a quarter marathon started at the same time. Forty-one runners finished across the three distances; two more started and did not finish, Guy Thibodeau in the half and Charlie Northrip in the quarter. Glenn Frick won the marathon in a personal best 2:42.27, having looked at the fields for the quarter and the half, decided he could not win either, and entered the full a few minutes before the start. "I woke up and my knees hurt and I had a side ache," he told the Empire. "But I got running and I felt great. I didn't train at all." John Schwarte of Gustavus was second in 2:48.56 and Gene Miller third in 3:31.48, both personal bests. Colleen Porter of Anchorage was the only woman in the marathon and finished seventh overall. Alan Graves won the half in 1:11.44 and Kelly Miller the quarter in 36.48. Daniel Archambeau flew from Marquette, Michigan to run it - a veteran of 25 marathons working through every state and Canadian province, this one his seventeenth state. The Empire reported the course record as 2:30.46, set in 1982 by Tom Bernard, then stationed in Juneau with the Coast Guard. It also noted the course was not sanctioned by the sport's national governing body, so times run here could not be used to qualify for Boston, New York or Chicago. Alaska State Capitol, Juneau July 18th 1987 (Saturday) 9:00AM | The 1987 Governor's Cup, three miles from in front of the state Capitol at 9 a.m. on Saturday 18 July - what the Empire called traditionally the biggest race of the summer season. False Outer Point, Douglas Island June 6th 1987 (Saturday) 10:00AM | The Peddle, Plod, Paddle Triathlon, from False Outer Point at 10 a.m., sponsored by the Southeast Road Runners with the Juneau Sea Kayak Club and the Freewheelers. Five dollars preregistered, eight on the day. The contact was Mara Rabinowitz. The Empire's listing heads the entry "Saturday, June 7". In 1987 the 7th of June was a Sunday and the 6th was the Saturday, so the two disagree. It is recorded here on Saturday the 6th, following the same reading applied to that year's Flannigans Run notice, which gave two dates that were each a day out while its day names were consistent. Sunday the 7th is an equally possible reading of what was printed. The listing describes "three legs, a 2-mile bike, 2-mile run and 9-mile bike" - two bikes and no paddle, in a race named for a paddle and co-sponsored by a sea kayak club. One of the two is certainly the paddle leg, but the clipping does not say which, so the legs are recorded as printed rather than corrected into a guess. No results were published.
