Foot of Eaglecrest Road to the Eaglecrest Lodge, Douglas September 1st 1985 (Sunday) 9:00AM | Location: start at the foot of Eaglecrest Road; finish at the Eaglecrest Lodge Course: up the Eaglecrest Road to the lodge Start Time: 9:00 AM Registration Fee: 6 dollars, including the pancake feed A five-mile fun run with prizes and gift certificates, followed by a pancake feed at the lodge from 9:30 to 11:00, open to everyone. Juneau August 10th 1985 (Saturday) 8:00AM | Distance: 26.2 miles, with a 13.1-mile half-marathon starting at the same time Location: Mendenhall Glacier Visitors Center parking lot Course: out and back from the glacier to Centennial Hall downtown. South from the Glacier Parking Lot past Super Bear and Floyd Dryden (miles 1-3), Fred Meyer and Lemon Creek (4-6), the half-marathon turnaround at Switzer Village (6.5), Vanderbilt Hill and Twin Lakes (8-9), Salmon Creek and the hospital (10), the Channel Marina and JD High School (11-12), then Glacier Avenue and Willoughby to the Federal Building, the State Office Building and Centennial Hall (13). Runners circle the block bounded by Willoughby, Whittier and Egan twice before returning. Switch to the bike path in several places, on the left side of the highway. The half-marathon follows the same course to its own turnaround Start Time: 8:00 AM, with entries taken at the race between 7:30 and 7:45 Registration Fee: 7 dollars with a T-shirt, 3 dollars without The Juneau Marathon and Half-Marathon. Aid stations with water and Gatorade at the 2-mile, 4-mile and 6.5-mile markers, near Bartlett Memorial Hospital and at Centennial Hall, serving runners in both directions. 4th Avenue, Juneau to the DMV parking lot, Hospital Drive July 20th 1985 (Saturday) 9:00AM | Location: start on 4th Avenue between the courthouse and the Capitol; finish at the DMV parking lot on Hospital Drive Course: round Calhoun Street past the Governor's Mansion, through the highlands on Martin, Evergreen and Angus, down Highland Drive to Behrends Avenue and the Glacier Highway, then the bike path to the finish Start Time: 9:00 AM, registration 8:15 to 8:45 Registration Fee: 7 dollars The Governor's Cup Fun Run, sponsored by Juneau Parks and Recreation and described by the Empire as the most popular running event in Juneau. Thane Road to the Federal Building, Juneau May 11th 1985 (Saturday) 10:30AM | Distance: 5 miles, with a 2.3-mile option Location: start at the Sewage Treatment Plant turnoff on Thane Road; finish near the Federal Building by the Lutheran Church Course: through downtown Juneau, climbing Franklin and Harris Streets to Basin Road, then back-tracking to the finish. A steep hill climb and a tour of downtown Juneau and Basin Road. The 2.3-mile course omits Basin Road and turns at 4th and Franklin Start Time: 10:30 AM, registration from 9:30 AM at the starting point Registration Fee: 5 dollars, or 15 dollars for a family The second annual Sperl-Gamble Memorial, in memory of Juneau-Douglas High School students killed in the Viet Nam War. Entry fees fund a scholarship for a JDHS graduate. The memorial honors Donald Sperl, Charles Gamble Jr., Michael Stevens and Kirk Barkley. Rick Thibodeau won in 25:53, running side by side with Alan Graves before kicking to a fifty-foot lead in the last mile. Those two are the only finishers the Empire printed, and no time was given for Graves. Organized in part by Karl Schoeppe. Tlingit-Haida Community Center, Hospital Drive, Juneau to Fish Creek, North Douglas May 4th 1985 (Saturday) 7:00PM | Location: start on Hospital Entrance Road near the Tlingit-Haida Center; finish at the Fish Creek parking lot, North Douglas Highway Course: across the Mendenhall Wetlands and over the Gastineau Channel at low tide, past Sunny Point, then a paved stretch through Bayview Subdivision to the finish Start Time: 7:00 PM Registration Fee: 5 dollars The fifth annual May Day Mud Race. The channel crossing is run at low tide, where the seawater is no more than a foot deep at the trail crossing; expect slippery spots, sand traps, tussocks and knee-deep water. Auke Lake, Juneau April 27th 1985 (Saturday) 10:00AM | Distance: 10 miles Location: University of Alaska-Juneau parking lot, Auke Lake Course: twice around the university lot, then south on the Glacier Highway and around the Loop Road past Floyd Dryden, across the Mendenhall River bridge and past DeHarts before the final stretch back to the campus Start Time: 10:00 AM, registration from 9:00 AM and closing 15 minutes before the start Registration Fee: 1 dollar, plus sponsors pledging at least 50 cents a mile The ninth Magnificent Mendenhall Mudpuddle Meet, run by Juneau Parks and Recreation, Juneau Special Olympics and the University of Alaska-Juneau as a fund-raiser for Special Olympics. Separate divisions for men and women at 15 and under, 16-26, 27-39 and 40 and over. T-shirts to the first 40 men and first 40 women, awards to the top three in each age group, and a 50 dollar prize for the runner raising the most in pledges. Jumbo gym, 4th Street, Douglas Course: a loop through Savikko Park, then out the Douglas Highway to a turnaround near the Juneau-Douglas Bridge and back to the gym.
