| Magnificent Mendenhall Mudpuddle Meet | University of Alaska Juneau campus | Distance: 10 miles Location: the University of Alaska Juneau campus, out around the Mendenhall Loop Road Start Time: 8:00 AM Registration Fee: 1 dollar The first Magnificent Mendenhall Mudpuddle Meet, staged by the University of Alaska, Juneau and Juneau Parks and Recreation to help defray travel costs for Juneau children going to the State Special Olympics in Anchorage. Runners found sponsors who pledged money by the mile, and Jim Dumont of Parks and Recreation asked that cheques be made out to the Juneau Association for Retarded Citizens. The course looped the University parking lot twice to pick up the six-tenths of a mile needed to make ten, went down the driveway to Glacier Highway and south into a chilly headwind, turned left onto the Loop Road for a quiet run toward the Glacier, then left again after about three miles for a hilly four miles back to the Glacier Highway and an uphill mile to the finish. The first 48 finishers were promised a t-shirt and everyone got one, printed with a runner holding an umbrella and the words "I did it in the rain - The Magnificent Mendenhall Mud Puddle Meet". Ribbons went to the first three in each of eight age brackets. | Juneau Parks and Rec | 1977-05-01 08:00:00 | no | no | yes | Registration Form |
